Filigran: Behind the Investment

En filigrane: a French expression that suggests something not immediately obvious but existing beneath the surface, ready to be discovered upon deeper inspection. There are few areas where this expression is as relevant today as in cybersecurity. The volume and complexity of cyber threat vectors is exploding, and security teams are drowning in noise.

Though the adoption of cyber threat intelligence (CTI) has proliferated during the last decade to help teams comprehend their attackers, CISOs still struggle to operationalize the value of the information that lies within. Security teams must first parse, clean, correlate, and maintain data streams from an increasing number of threat sources before they even begin to ask strategic questions. The burden on analysts is compounding and as threat actors leverage AI to deploy more sophisticated and automated methods of attack, companies must find ways to stay ahead of the curve.

Filigran’s founding philosophy is to democratize threat intelligence so that every organization has the tools it needs to defend itself against these evolving attacks. The company’s first open-source offering, OpenCTI, unifies and operationalizes threat intel data across a variety of sources so that users can aggregate, correlate, and structure information about potential threat actors. This approach allows organizations to take proactive action, as the platform gives a granular view into what is occurring in real-time and connects the enriched data to downstream security tools. With the release of their second product, OpenBAS, an attack simulation and security posture validation platform, teams can use up-to-date threat intel data to better anticipate cyber threats and stress-test critical infrastructure.

Filigran’s founding philosophy is to democratize threat intelligence so that every organization has the tools it needs to defend itself against these evolving attacks.

From our discussions with security leaders, it was clear that Filigran stood apart in the market. Not only did the company manage to create a passionate open-source community, but it also launched a commercial platform that resonated with organizations like Marriott, Airbus, New York City Cyber Command, Rivian and the FBI.

Yet even beyond what Filigran has built today, it is their vision for what is to come with their Extended Threat Management (XTM) suite that will continue to shift the threat intelligence landscape from reactive to proactive. The XTM suite integrates Filigran’s OpenCTI platform with OpenBAS, providing a unified view of potential risks. Together and through continued product innovation, the XTM suite helps organizations understand threat environments, anticipate and detect incidents, decrease incident response time, stress-test critical infrastructure, and design viable long-term cybersecurity strategies.

Yet even beyond what Filigran has built today, it is their vision for what is to come with their Extended Threat Management (XTM) suite that will continue to shift the threat intelligence landscape from reactive to proactive.

From our first interactions with the Filigran team, it was clear that they had the leaders that could execute on this vision. Samuel Hassine and Julien Richard, Filigran’s two founders, combine technical leadership with deep domain empathy. Samuel brings more than 15 years of experience in threat intelligence, most notably from ANSSI (the French National Cybersecurity Agency) where he was the head of Threat and Risk Analysis, while also previously serving as Director of Security Strategy at Tanium. Meanwhile, Julien has stewarded data and engineering teams for two decades. In just two years, the founders have assembled a world-class team that manages to quickly ship innovative products to capture the market. Over 6,000 public and private organizations worldwide already leverage Filigran, spanning both federal agencies and multinational corporations.

We’re blown away by Samuel and Julien’s execution, the vibrant open-source community they’ve cultivated, and the scale of their ambition. We couldn’t be more excited to join Filigran in realizing their mission and to partner with another leader in cybersecurity, alongside others like Wiz, Island, SentinelOne, and Recorded Future. Congratulations on all your success, Filigran, and welcome to the Insight family!
